If your goal is real exterior-door security, a deadbolt should be the primary lock. A knob/lever lock is fine for convenience, but shouldn’t be the only exterior lock.

A deadbolt throws a solid metal bolt into the door frame. Because it’s not spring-loaded, it can’t be “slipped” the way a latch can.
A knob lock (or lever lock) usually secures a spring latch and houses the cylinder in the knob/lever. On exterior doors, the exposed hardware can be attacked with basic tools.
| Scenario | Deadbolt | Knob/Lever Lock | What we recommend |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front door (primary entry) | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes | Deadbolt + knob/lever + reinforced strike plate |
| Back door / patio door (standard swing door) | ✅ Yes | Optional | Deadbolt at minimum |
| Door between garage and house | ✅ Yes | Optional | Deadbolt at minimum |
| Interior bedroom/bathroom | Optional | ✅ Yes | Knob/lever for privacy |
| Rental property turnover | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes | Rekeyable deadbolt or smart deadbolt |
| High-risk/upgrade security | ✅ Yes | Optional | Grade 1/2 deadbolt + door/frame reinforcement |
Most residential door break-ins are forced-entry attempts (kicks, prying, hardware attack). In that reality:
If you’re choosing *one* upgrade that moves the needle: add a quality deadbolt and reinforce the frame.
Lockbusters installs and upgrades exterior door locks across Sugar Land and Fort Bend County.
